Scramble Handicap

Scramble Handicap
Calculator.

Scramble formats use a weighted team handicap based on each player's Course Handicap. The standard England Golf method assigns different percentages to each player based on ability. Here's how to calculate it for 2, 3, and 4-player teams.

How scramble works

In a scramble (Texas Scramble), all players in the team tee off, the best shot is selected, and everyone plays their next shot from that position. This repeats until the ball is holed. Because the best shot is always used, the team typically scores well below any individual's ability — hence the reduced team handicap.

4-player Texas Scramble

Formula — order players lowest to highest Course Handicap

Team Handicap = (A × 0.10) + (B × 0.15) + (C × 0.20) + (D × 0.25)

A = lowest CH, D = highest CH. Round to nearest whole number.

The weighting reflects reality: the best player's shot will be used more often, so they contribute less to the team handicap. The highest handicapper, whose shot is chosen less frequently, contributes more.

Worked example — 4-player team (Slope 116, CR 70.5, Par 70)
Player A (HI 4.8) → CH5 × 0.10 = 0.5
Player B (HI 11.2) → CH12 × 0.15 = 1.8
Player C (HI 18.0) → CH19 × 0.20 = 3.8
Player D (HI 24.5) → CH26 × 0.25 = 6.5
Total → roundedTeam Handicap = 13
Result: The team plays off 13 — substantially fewer shots than any individual member. Their gross target score becomes course par + 13.

3-player scramble

Formula — order players lowest to highest Course Handicap

Team Handicap = (A × 0.10) + (B × 0.20) + (C × 0.30)

A = lowest CH, C = highest CH. Round to nearest whole number.

Worked example — 3-player team (Slope 113, CR 72.0, Par 72)
Player A (HI 8.0) → CH 88 × 0.10 = 0.8
Player B (HI 16.0) → CH 1616 × 0.20 = 3.2
Player C (HI 22.0) → CH 2222 × 0.30 = 6.6
Total → roundedTeam Handicap = 11
Result: 3-player team plays off 11.

2-player scramble (American Scramble)

Formula

Team Handicap = (lower CH × 0.15) + (higher CH × 0.35)

Round to nearest whole number.

Worked example (Slope 113, CR 72.0, Par 72)
Player A: CH 1010 × 0.15 = 1.5
Player B: CH 2020 × 0.35 = 7.0
Total → roundedTeam Handicap = 9
Result: 2-player team plays off 9.

How to use the team handicap

Once you have the team handicap, deduct it from the team's gross score over 18 holes to get the net score. In stroke play, the lowest net score wins. Most societies run Texas Scramble as a stroke play event with gross and net prizes.

Note that Texas Scramble rounds do not qualify as WHS handicap returns. The format is for competition use only — individual scores cannot be submitted from a scramble round.

Common questions

Is there an official WHS scramble handicap formula?

The WHS does not define an official scramble handicap in the Rules of Handicapping because scramble is not a WHS-qualifying format. The percentages above (10/15/20/25% for four players) are the England Golf recommended guidelines widely used in UK club and society play. Some clubs use different percentages — always check with the organiser before the round.

What is Ambrose golf?

Ambrose is the Australian term for a team scramble, most commonly played with 2 or 4 players. The rules are the same as Texas Scramble — everyone plays from the best shot — but Ambrose is typically scored against a team handicap calculated as the combined handicaps divided by the number of players. In UK play, the weighted percentage method above is more common and gives fairer results across teams of different compositions.

Can we use the team handicap in matchplay?

Yes — Texas Scramble matchplay is possible. Two scramble teams play head-to-head, with the shot difference between their respective team handicaps determining who receives shots and on which holes (by Stroke Index). This is popular in corporate and society events where two teams play a 9 or 18-hole match against each other.

What's the difference between Texas Scramble and a Shotgun?

A shotgun start is just a way of organising tee times — all groups start simultaneously on different holes so everyone finishes around the same time. It's not a format itself. Texas Scramble can (and often does) use a shotgun start, but scramble describes how you play each hole, not when you start.
