WHS Explained

What Counts as a
Qualifying Round?

Not every round you play updates your Handicap Index. Under the WHS, only rounds that meet specific format, hole count, and submission requirements generate a Score Differential that counts towards your index.

Formats that qualify

Stroke play (medal)

Every hole played individually, total gross score submitted. The most common qualifying format at club level.

Stableford

Individual Stableford rounds qualify. The gross score is reconstructed from the Stableford points before the Score Differential is calculated. See Stableford handicap allowances.

Par / bogey competitions

These qualify in the same way as Stableford — the result is converted back to a gross score equivalent before the differential is calculated.

Singles matchplay

Qualifying, provided every hole is completed (no conceded holes left unplayed). If a hole is conceded before it's finished, that hole's score for handicap purposes is the net par — par plus any shots the player receives on that hole.

General play rounds

Casual rounds can qualify provided they are played under the Rules of Golf, have a marker, and are submitted promptly via your national federation's app. The round must be pre-registered or submitted same day in most systems.

Formats that do not qualify

Foursomes (alternate shot)

Each player only hits alternate shots, so no individual gross score exists for the round. The WHS cannot produce a Score Differential without a complete individual hole-by-hole score.

Four-ball (better ball)

Although each player plays their own ball, only the better score on each hole is recorded for the team — not both players' complete hole scores. This means an individual gross score per hole cannot always be derived. Four-ball rounds do not qualify.

Texas Scramble / Ambrose

Team scramble formats do not qualify for the same reason as foursomes — there is no individual gross score per hole. The team selects the best shot each time, so individual differentials cannot be calculated.

Greensomes / Canadian Greensomes

Both players drive, then play each other's ball before selecting the best — from that point it's alternate shot. Because individual hole scores are not completed by a single player, these do not generate qualifying differentials.

Practice rounds and non-conforming equipment

Rounds played with non-conforming clubs, balls, or under modified Rules of Golf do not qualify. Rounds played for practice without a marker do not qualify regardless of format.

Minimum holes required

Round typeHoles playedMinimum to qualify
18-hole roundFull courseMinimum 14 holes completed
9-hole round9 holesMinimum 7 holes completed

If you complete at least 14 holes of an 18-hole round, the remaining holes are recorded as net par (par plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole). This protects your score from being skewed by holes you didn't play — and means the round still counts.

9-hole rounds are submitted separately and combine with a second 9-hole round to produce a full 18-hole differential. Most national federation apps handle this automatically — the 9-hole scores are held until a pair exists to combine.

Marker and submission requirements

Marker

You must have a marker — someone who records and attests your score. In a club competition, this is a fellow competitor. For general play rounds, it can be any other golfer playing with you. They do not need to be a member of your club.

Submission timing

Scores must be submitted promptly — typically same day. General play rounds submitted days later may be rejected by the system. Competition rounds submitted through your club are handled automatically.

Course requirements

The course must have a valid WHS Course Rating and Slope Rating for the tees you're playing. Courses that aren't rated cannot generate a differential — the system has no baseline to calculate against.

Competition vs general play

Both count equally towards your Handicap Index. A general play round submitted correctly carries the same weight as a club medal round. The distinction is administrative, not mathematical.

Common questions

Does a bad round always hurt my handicap?

Not necessarily. Your Handicap Index uses only your best 8 of your last 20 Score Differentials. A high differential from a bad round only affects your index if it displaces one of your previous best 8 from the rolling pool — which happens when you have fewer than 20 rounds on record, or when a bad round falls into the top 8 (which would require the rest of your pool to also be poor).

Can I play a qualifying round at any golf course?

Yes, provided the course has a valid WHS Course Rating and Slope Rating for the tees you play. Most affiliated clubs in the UK have their courses fully rated. If a course isn't rated, the round cannot be used as a qualifying round regardless of format or marker. When playing away from your home club, check with the host club whether the course is rated and whether they can facilitate a general play submission.

Does a Ryder Cup or society day count?

The team formats used in a Ryder Cup day (foursomes and four-ball) do not generate qualifying rounds. However, if the same day includes an individual format session — such as an individual Stableford — that session can qualify if properly set up and submitted. Most society days do not qualify because they use team formats throughout.

What happens if I don't finish a hole?

If you pick up on a hole without completing it, that hole is recorded as net par for handicap purposes — par plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole (based on your Playing Handicap and the hole's Stroke Index). The round can still qualify as long as the minimum hole requirement is met.

How do I submit a general play round?

In England, use the England Golf app (MyEG). In Scotland, the Scottish Golf app. In Ireland, GUI/ILGU Handicap Manager. The process is: select the course and tees, enter your hole-by-hole scores, have your marker confirm (usually via the same app or by signing a physical card), and submit. Some clubs require you to register a general play round before you go out — check with your home club.
