Can You Pick Up
Your Ball in Matchplay?

Yes — but picking up without a concession means you concede the hole. Here's when it's the right move and when it's a costly mistake.

Short Answer

Yes — you can pick up your ball at any point in a matchplay hole. Doing so without a concession from your opponent means you concede that hole. It is a deliberate strategic option, not an automatic penalty.

When picking up is the right call

In matchplay, each hole is its own contest. There is no point playing out a hole you cannot win — picking up and moving on is perfectly normal and often tactically smart.

The hole is already lost

If your opponent has holed out and their net score is better than your best possible score, the hole is decided. Pick up, concede the hole with a "well played," and move on. There is nothing to gain from playing out a lost hole.

Pace of play

Matchplay has no requirement to hole out once the hole result is determined. Picking up in these situations keeps pace of play smooth and is considered good etiquette — particularly in society and club events where groups behind you are waiting.

Protecting information about your ball flight

Some experienced players pick up rather than hole out a chip or bunker shot — especially when the hole is already decided. Playing unnecessary shots shows your opponent exactly how your short game is performing. In a tight match, that information has value.

When picking up goes wrong

Picking up before the hole is decided

If the hole result is still open and you pick up your ball without a concession from your opponent, you automatically concede the hole to them. This is a costly mistake if your opponent was about to make a bogey and you were lying two.

Picking up a conceded putt that wasn't actually conceded

Never pick up your ball unless you have heard a clear concession from your opponent. Gestures or ambiguous comments can be misread. If in doubt, ask directly: "Is that good?" If yes, pick up. If no, putt it.

Accidental pick-up

If you pick up your ball by mistake during a hole — for example, confusing it with a practice ball or picking it up to mark it when you weren't asked to — and the hole result is still in play, you concede that hole. Treat your ball carefully.

The fourball exception

In four-ball matchplay, where each team plays the best ball of the two partners, a player can pick up their ball at any time without penalty to their partner — as long as their partner's ball is still in play and can win the hole for the team.

Example

Player A is in deep rough and clearly can't contribute. Player B has a good approach. Player A picks up — the team's ball (Player B's) is still live and the hole can still be won. No penalty to the team. (Rule 23.3c)

Common questions

Can I pick up my ball in matchplay to save time even if the hole is still live?

Yes — but you concede that hole when you do. Picking up a live ball without a concession is treated as conceding the hole to your opponent. If you're happy to lose that hole to save time, you can pick up. But if the hole result is still open, you're giving away a point.

My opponent picked up their ball but the hole wasn't lost — who wins the hole?

You win the hole. When a player picks up their ball before the hole result is determined (without a concession from you), they concede that hole. The win goes to you. This is one of the most common rule situations in casual matchplay.

Can you pick up in matchplay without losing the hole if your opponent also picks up?

If both players pick up with no concession made on either side, both players are treated as having conceded the hole to each other simultaneously — the hole is halved. In practice, both players must agree to this to avoid any dispute.

Do I have to hole out after a conceded putt?

No — in fact, you should pick up once your putt is conceded. The hole result is already decided. Holing out after a concession has no bearing on the score. The conceded stroke counts as one shot on the scorecard regardless of whether you physically hole the ball.
